As per my usual routine, the month is almost over, which means I finally write my monthly blog post. Go me! I could give you a million excuses because Lord knows I have them, but I will save you the broken record that is my "I am sorry I am not Superwoman, but think I can do everything even though am and am hanging by a thread of sanity and only survive because of wine and caffeine" excuse.
This year I suck at this blog. But, I am good at goal setting and brainstorming ideas, so 2014 is going to ROCK with Wamalicious !
Back to October. October is the last financial focus month. We started off on a good foot. We met with a financial planner in Moscow. Now, I have a financial planner in Seattle with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Great company and if you EVER need financial advice or want to get serious about your financial future and investments, see Sam Capps at the Northgate office. PS you're welcome Capps ;) We are going to talk to him as well, so please don't think we have abandoned him. We are keeping our options open and "shopping" around for financial help.
Anyhoo, we met with Shon in Moscow. I was skeptical because I am always skeptical when I meet with someone who deals with investments because I assume (and we know what happens when we assume....) they will take my money. What's the point of meeting with someone who will give you advice, but turn around and profit from you? Because they are smart. They are here to help you and the amount they get from you is way smaller than you think. He was great! We talked to Shon about where we are financially and discussed our goals and figured out new goals. So fun! Please bare with me, I am a financial nerd and I love this kind of stuff. I also like goal setting. TOTAL NERD, but a nerd who gets results. BOOM.
We are meeting with him again next week to talk about both of WAM's retirement accounts and to plan a little more for retirement. Believe it or not, we'd like to retire. Thanks to our "society" (to be nice and PC...or something...) we may not even get the opportunity to receive social security checks. We are also going to talk about investments.....investments do not mean stocks. Why is that the first thing we typically think of? It just is. We are going to talk about investments as in savings and high(er) interest savings. Saving for our future.
One thing that Shon did that I loved was to ask us where we wanted to be financially, professionally and personally in 3 years, 5-10 years and 10+ years. I thought, "hell ya, I know exactly where we can.....wait a minute....in 3 years I will be 32....that means potential wambies!" I freaked. I sat with my mouth open and then kept saying, "HOLY CRAP!" Both Will and Shon looked at me like I was totally insane...I am used to that look. And that's a wrap on wambie talk. Goals were set. Goals were discussed. One goal that wI really liked is that I will get a sassy SUV in the 10 year future-w00t!
All in all this post was to say that since we are newlyweds, we are taking our future, especially finances, seriously. We are thinking about the near future, but also the distant future. It was great to have a third party talk to us about finances, even though I could have done it. It's a neutral ground so it's not a nagging wife telling the husband what to do. It was nice. It was eye opening. We found out where each other's priorities lie. We're on the same page. We're feeling a little more excited and confident about our future.
